Brahmas are usually known to be large and majestic Asiatic bird, but they also come with a miniature counterpart. Brahmas are sturdy birds with small pea combs, making them cold hearty and perfect for our cold Canadian winters. In the -40C weather, you will find them wandering and scratching around the chicken coop, oblivious to the frost in the air and the blizzard outside.
Brahma chickens originated in the United States in the 1800’s alongside their full size counterpart and were accepted into the American Poultry Association in 1895. Mature males weigh 3 pounds (1.4kg), while females weigh 2 pounds (0.9kg).
Brahma hens start laying between 6-8 months old, and lay an average of 150 small light coloured eggs a year.
Our Brahmas are the calm and sensible chicken on our farm. They are happy to come up for treats, get along with any size/type of bird in the flock, and not much will get them riled up.
On our farm we have the bantam Brahma in Lemon and Buff varieties.
